MUĞLA: THE POINT WHERE JOURNEYS MEET Muğla is located in the southwest of Türkiye and is the only province with coastlines on both the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. It is an important hub where some of Türkiye’s most popular holiday routes intersect, such as Bodrum, Datça, Fethiye, Marmaris, Köyceğiz and Dalyan. With a 1,480-kilometre coastline, it has the longest shoreline in the country. The city centre of Muğla stands out with a calmer and more local lifestyle behind the busy coastal resorts. Although it is not located directly by the sea, it sits at the centre of the roads leading to the coast, ancient cities and forested areas. The city functions both as a genuine urban centre where daily life continues, and as a starting point for the surrounding holiday routes. In the city centre, you see old Muğla houses with whitewashed walls, wooden bay windows and distinctive chimneys. In the narrow streets, you find neighbourhood bakeries, coffee houses that have preserved the same local culture for many years, and small artisan shops. Rather than large shopping malls, the rhythm of city life is shaped by the market, the greengrocer, the barber and the herbalist. REŞADİYE: THE FOOTPRINTS OF EXPERIENCE AND MEMORY Reşadiye is one of the three settlements (Old Datça, Reşadiye and İskele) that make up the centre of Datça and is among the oldest neighbourhoods of the district. With its stone houses, narrow streets, centuries-old trees and preserved traditional texture, the neighbourhood has been designated as a protected site. For this reason, even though you are very close to modern Datça town centre while walking through Reşadiye, you encounter a calmer atmosphere with a village-like feel. Historically, the area was first known as Elaki, and in 1908 it was renamed Reşadiye in reference to Sultan Reşad. Today, with its restored old stone houses and its location surrounded by olive groves and almond orchards, Reşadiye stands out as a part of Datça that should be seen. A GUIDE TO EXPLORING REŞADİYE Reşadiye Neighbourhood Reşadiye is, in itself, a preserved neighbourhood registered as an urban protected site. Walking through its narrow streets, you can see old stone houses, courtyards, gardens and centuries-old trees. Reşadiye has an architectural texture very similar to Old Datça. Reşadiye Mosque (Old Mosque) This mosque, located in the centre of the neighbourhood, dates back to the Ottoman period. The Great Plane Tree (Koca Çınar) The great plane tree in Reşadiye stands right in front of Mehmet Ali Ağa Mansion (Kocaev) and is one of the symbolic trees of the neighbourhood. It is thought to be at least 200 years old. Olive Groves and Almond Orchards When you move a little beyond the borders of the neighbourhood, you come across the almond orchards and olive groves characteristic of Datça. Village Coffee Houses and Small Workshops Many of the old stone houses in the neighbourhood are now used as small cafés, workshops or shops. Here, you can come across small studios selling handmade jewellery, ceramics and textile products. In addition, you can still find traditional village coffee houses that remain in operation. A GUIDE TO EXPLORING OLD DATÇA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS Walk Through the Streets of Old Datça You can walk along the narrow stone streets and discover the old houses covered with bougainvillea, small cafés and boutique shops. Catch the Sunset in Knidos At Knidos Ancient City, located at the tip of the peninsula, you can sit on the steps of the ancient theatre and watch the harbour opening to the sea. Swim in Different Coves You can swim in the clean and clear waters of coves such as Palamutbükü, Ovabükü, Hayıtbükü and Kargı. Walk Along Datça Seafront You can walk along the coastline via İskele, Kumluk and Sevgi Road. If you wish, you can also spend time at the cafés or fish restaurants by the sea. Take a Boat Trip With boats departing from Datça town centre or Palamutbükü, you can see the peninsula’s coves, small islets and swimming spots that can only be reached from the sea. Taste Datça Almonds and Local Products Datça is famous for its almonds, honey, olive oil and wines. You can taste these products and enjoy a pleasant shopping experience at the market or in small shops. Experience the Wind and Nature Thanks to its wind, Datça has a climate that is not oppressive in summer. For this reason, it has become a highly preferred region for nature walks as well as for water sports.
